In fact, his music was changing from the more traditional classical style of Haydn and Mozart to an entirely new emotional and dramatic style. Not everyone liked Beethoven’s music. Some people said it was too jolting, even shocking. Some parts were soft and sad, others suddenly loud and angry, still others lilting and joyful. Beethoven used simple melodies that kept repeating and building into a mass of deep, rich sound. Sometimes the music appeared to be ending with strong, final-sounding notes.
One of his piano students was Ferdinand Ries, a friend and composer. One day before his lesson, Ries joined Beethoven on a long walk. The whole time, Beethoven hummed and wailed up and down the scale. He clasped his hands behind his back. His hair was wild under his top hat. When Ries asked what he was singing, Beethoven said he’d had an idea for the last movement of his new piano sonata. Once home, Beethoven rushed to the piano without taking off his hat. Ries sat down to listen. Beethoven’s hairy hands moved nimbly along the keyboard.

But this time, Beethoven knew his ideas were fresh and new. Beethoven, thirty-one, relaxed in the peacefulness of Heiligenstadt. But his health problems threatened something he loved as much as living—hearing music. Beethoven believed his hearing should be more perfect than anyone else’s. On October 6, 1802, he wrote a private letter in the form of a will for his two brothers.
