But fellow members of the Corps are almost never addressed by rank. “When they walk in the door, it’s always ‘Hello, Marine,’ ” he explains. “Because that’s more important than being a general or a private or a lieutenant. They’re Marines. ” His smile is engaging and genuine, his speech quick and articulate. When he talks about friends lost in World War II, even the youngest ones, his voice does not modulate much; he has long since made his peace with the dead. But when he speaks of the Corps itself—of its history, traditions, and unique spirit—his face reanimates and his voice gets quiet and impassioned.

This long history of interser vice rivalry had a pronounced effect on how the Corps operated in American society during World War II and the early Cold War, but not in the way one might think. Instead of isolating themselves from outsiders, the Marines worked to extend bridges across the wide ideological moat that separated their world from the rest of American society. Those bridges led to networks of allies and proxies in Congress, Hollywood, the news media, and other key constituencies.  Civilians played a role too, either by cooperating with the Corps or by appropriating its prestige for their own purposes.

And the esprit de corps comes from several things, but one of the contributing factors is a knowledge of our heritage. . Whenever we were marching somewhere or taking a break from close-order drill . . they [the DIs] would just give us a two- or three-minute vignette about some individual in Marine Corps history or some great battle. And we listened . . we’d hear it again a week later, two weeks later, three weeks later, from another DI or a different instructor. By the time we graduated from boot camp, we knew a lot about Marine Corps history.
