This was the case, for example, of the Leverone from Cicagna (millers and bakers) and of the Malatesta (carriers) who were settled along one of the muletracks which went from the bottom of the valley towards the Apennine passes. In general, however, the entrepreneur roles were multiform. The activities of merchant, innkeeper and miller could co-exist in the same kin and in some cases in the same people. The rich millers, the middlemen and the local entrepreneurs gave work especially to 'poor relatives', young bachelors and women.
