These issues of substance relate to the interpretation of the dialectic of war. How are the positive and negative dimensions to war that Kant detects to be reconciled? I deal with this question first in relation to the Critique of the Power of Judgment; secondly in relation to the ‘guarantee’ that is provided in Perpetual Peace; thirdly in relation to the interpretive strategy that lies behind the Critique of Pure Reason. By looking at these topics we shall be able to determine more precisely how strongly Kant believes in the end of war.

Indeed, ‘nature guarantees perpetual peace by the mechanism of human passions. Certainly she does not do so with sufficient certainty for us to predict the future in any theoretical sense, but adequately from a practical point of view, making it our duty to work toward this end, which is not just a chimerical one’ (8: 368/445). There is an extraordinary liberality of spirit towards the human race at work here. Kant argues that we can never give up the sublime vision of lastingly peaceful world – not primarily as a scientific hypothesis about the course of human life, but as an imaginative construction underlying our free action.

Just war theorists attempt to specify as accurately as possible those precise conditions that make a war morally right and so legally acceptable. 10 It asks whether this satirical phrase represents his considered view on the subject and whether or not there might be some inconsistencies in his position that prevent him from being regarded as an unequivocal opponent of the theory. 11 In this chapter we pursue this issue by looking at the background to just war theory in international law in Kant’s day.
