At the most basic level, I wish to show that ‘late Shakespeare’ is a term which, while it delineates a small group of texts located chronologically within the career of a single playwright, is an instance of a far more broadly deployed understanding of ‘late style’ or ‘old-age style’, an understanding which is presented as transcultural and transhistorical in scope but which was in fact first constructed in the conditions of emerging Romanticism and is capable of being fully understood only within that context.
