Every morning he would be up from his chair and waiting at the front door for it to be delivered. Once it arrived, he would stretch out the reading experience as long as possible: Putting on his gold-rimmed glasses and assembling his smoking equipment, he would read every part of the paper, including the date on each page, the page numbers, even the want ads. Eventually, though, he pulled himself out of his depression, getting out of his chair to chase his misbehaving children. ) Once out of his chair, he did not return, and given the chance to buy a new business from a friend, he jumped at the opportunity.

So to help maintain her “Chinaness,” Maxine also attended the Chung Wah Chinese School for American Children every day after school from five o’clock until eight o’clock and from nine o’clock on Sundays.
