The Sioux women broke camp and headed north across the prairie. The army took a year to exact revenge. In the summer of 1855, General William Harney led a force of 600 soldiers. On September 3, Harney found the Brulé camp. Curly was away taming a mustang. Harney attacked without mercy. The soldiers killed eighty-six Brulé, including many women and children. The soldiers mutilated their bodies. When Curly returned, he saw what no Sioux had seen before. No Sioux camp had ever been destroyed. This was a new kind of war.
