He was born Alfred Bessette on April 9, 1845, near the village of Saint-Grégoire d'Iberville, in the Page 4 diocese of Montreal, Canada. By the time he was twelve he lost both parents, and since he had to go to work when still a young teenager, his formal education was necessarily limited. His jobs were varied, and there was a period when he worked (1863-1867) in a factory in New York. Upon his return to Canada he entered (November 1870) the Congregation of the Holy Cross as a brother, and received the name André.

January 4 St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Religious Memorial St. Elizabeth Ann Seton is the foundress of the American Sisters of Charity, and the first born American to be canonized a saint. She was born Elizabeth Ann Bayley on August 28, 1774, in New York City; both her parents were Episcopalians and she was brought up in that faith. She married (January 25, 1794) William Magee Seton, a wealthy New York merchant, and the couple had five children. During a visit to Italy, Mr. Seton died (December 1803), and there Mrs.
