The best way for a builder to avoid osmosis is to use a substantial layer of gelcoat (which is expensive) and plenty of resin in the layup process (which also is expensive and adds substantial weight). Another way to retard osmosis is to spray the hull (at least the bottom up to the waterline, and preferably the entire exterior) with a coat of polyurethane or epoxy paint. In addition to reducing the gelcoat’s porosity below the waterline, the coating also will counter the gelcoat’s tendency above the waterline to chalk and develop hairline cracks, especially under the relentless heat of a tropical sun.
UPPER DECK LAYOUT A good cruising boat will have a ﬂying bridge as the primary station from which it will be helmed in fair weather (see photo). For safety in rough seas, you should be able to reach the bridge by a protected ladder from the pilothouse rather than having to go on deck. A bimini top for the ﬂying / 31 bridge is a virtual necessity for providing shade in the tropics (especially considering the connection between the sun and skin cancer), but you should be able to fold it down easily to secure it in high winds.
