Get Creating the Florentine State: Peasants and Rebellion, PDF

This ebook takes a brand new method of the political background of the Italian Renaissance. It examines the Florentine country from its mountainous outer edge, the place Florence met its such a lot strenuous competition to territorial incorporation. From a tributary country, which handled its surrounding geographical region as little greater than a tax reservoir and a buffer opposed to international invaders, Florence started to see its personal self-interest as intertwined with that of its quarter and its rural subjects--a swap led to through frequent and profitable peasant uprisings, hitherto unrecorded by means of historians.

The second argument put forward by Dewerpe to prove the validity of the model is that women and children were employed in silk factories only on a temporary basis. This, however, is an aspect of which we, in fact, still know very little. The official picture of family life in silk producing districts portrayed in the nineteenth century was optimistic if not idyllic. Industrialisation, apart from a few dissenting voices, was not associated with a disruption of family life. 15 There are indications that the majority of women left the factories after the age of thirty, but this appears to be the case even in the industrial cities of Britain and cannot be taken as evidence of proto-industrialisation (Anderson, 1971; Pinchbeck, 1930).

It is interesting that Dewerpe sees this type of family as the product of proto-industrialisation based on the expansion of the silk industry, while in my view it formed the precondition for the spread of the factory system to the hilly areas. 5 Cantoni, writing in 1850 and again in 1856, pointed out that the masseria system had undergone a process of disintegration as early as the first half of the nineteenth century, putting an end to a patriarchal and mutually supportive, as well as hierarchical community, and opening the way for a rural society made up of precarious nuclear families, constantly in competition with each other for a plot of land to cultivate.
